How Much Do Gates Cost in Ireland?
The Honest Answer — and Why Nobody's Price List Is Real.

Here’s the truth the industry doesn’t say out loud: steel and aluminium prices move constantly. Any company publishing fixed gate prices online is either padding them to stay safe, or quoting numbers that were true last quarter. We do it differently — this guide shows you exactly what drives the cost of a custom gate, and your real number comes from a free survey with today’s material rates, itemised line by line and locked in writing.

The Cost Ladder

Four Bands, Cheapest to Dearest

We don’t publish euro figures — material markets won’t allow honest ones. But the ladder never changes: here’s how gate types rank against each other, so you know roughly where your project sits before anyone visits.

Pedestrian & Side Gates  €

The entry point. A single made-to-measure gate — simple bar designs at the lower end, hardwood-infill or scrollwork designs above. Fitted to existing piers or walls.

Double Driveway Gates  €€

The most common job: a bespoke pair of swing gates, galvanised and powder-coated. Design complexity, height and infill set where you land within the band.

Automated Gate Systems  €€€

Gate plus automation engineered together: motors, safety edges, photocells, access control and groundworks. Sliding automation typically runs above swing.

Large Sliding & Commercial  €€€€

Cantilever sliding gates up to 17 m, industrial and site entrance gates — priced per project on span, cycle rating and specification.

Why We Don't Publish Prices

Steel Moves Weekly. Our Quotes Don't.

A gate is mostly material: steel section, aluminium, galvanising, coating. Those markets reprice constantly — sometimes noticeably within a single month. That leaves companies with online price lists two options, and both are bad for you: pad the price so they’re covered whatever the market does, or quote stale numbers and claw it back later with extras.

Our answer: we price your gate at today’s actual material rates, itemise every line so you see exactly where the money goes — steel, fabrication, finish, automation, installation — and lock the figure in writing for a stated validity period. If material prices drop between quote and order, ask us to re-run it. That’s the fairest system we know.

What Drives the Price

The Six Factors on Every Quote

1 · Span & height — more steel, more engineering; very wide openings may need a sliding gate.
2 · Design complexity — clean modern bars cost less to fabricate than scrollwork and period detail.
3 · Infill & materials — open bar, solid privacy panels, or hardwood cladding on a steel frame.
4 · Finish — hot-dip galvanising is our baseline; powder-coating in any RAL colour is the usual next step.
5 · Automation & access — motors, safety kit, keypads, intercoms, app control; see electric gates.
6 · Site & groundworks — piers, foundations, power supply and ducting where automation is planned.

How to Compare Gate Quotes Fairly

Three questions separate a good quote from a cheap one. Is the steel galvanised — or just primed and painted, which rusts from the inside out within a few Irish winters? Who actually makes the gate — a certified fabrication workshop, or a reseller fitting an imported catalogue gate? Is safety included in the automation price — safety edges and photocells are not optional extras. And one more: is the quote itemised? A single mystery number hides padding; line items can’t. Every Marmion quote answers all four in writing, with EN1090 EX2 certified fabrication behind it. Need a repair rather than a new gate? Repairs and retrofits here.

Honestly: it depends on span, design, finish and automation — and on material markets, which move constantly. That's why we quote at today's rates rather than publishing stale numbers. The cost ladder above shows how gate types rank; a free survey gets you an exact, itemised, written figure.

Because steel and aluminium reprice too often for published figures to be honest. An online price list is either padded for safety or out of date. We'd rather give you a real number, itemised, at today's rates — locked in writing.

Sometimes, for a temporary fix. But un-galvanised imported gates typically corrode within a few Irish winters, and standard sizes rarely fit real entrances. A fabricated, galvanised gate is usually the cheaper option over ten years.

No — the automation package is a defined add-on covering motor, safety kit and electrical works. We quote the gate and automation as separate lines so you can decide each on its merits — many clients fit an automation-ready gate now and add the motor later.
